Overview

Originally completed in 1868, the Municipal Building served as Liverpool City Council’s headquarters until 2017 and is a prominent Grade II* listed landmark on Dale Street, recognised for its sandstone façade, French-style curved roofs, central clock tower, and projecting corner pavilions. The project involved the refurbishment and extension of the building to create a 179-bedroom luxury hotel in Liverpool city centre, including a four-storey extension to accommodate additional bedrooms and new leisure facilities such as a swimming pool and spa. The professional team included Falconer Chester Hall as architect, Curtins Consulting as structural engineers, Koncept ID for interior design, heritage architect Stephen Levrant, and independent fire consultants Jerry Quayle & Associates.

Challenges

Delivering a modern luxury hotel within a Grade II* listed structure required careful coordination between heritage constraints, contemporary design requirements, and modern building standards. The works demanded close collaboration across a large professional team, precise sequencing on a complex city centre site, and a consistently high level of quality to integrate new construction and specialist joinery within a historically sensitive environment.
